The Biggest Misconception About IP Math Tuition in Singapore

Every year, I meet parents searching for IP Math Tuition.

Many begin the conversation with the same question.

“Do you teach the IP syllabus?”

It is an understandable question. After all, the Integrated Programme (IP) is often perceived as being very different from the mainstream secondary school pathway. Parents naturally assume that their child requires a completely different type of Mathematics tuition.

Surprisingly, after teaching both IP and mainstream students for many years, I would answer that question rather differently.

In my opinion, one of the biggest misconceptions surrounding IP Mathematics is that it is an entirely different subject.

It is not.

Understanding this can help parents make much better decisions when choosing an IP Maths tutor.

What Exactly Is IP Math?

The first two years of the Integrated Programme are largely similar to the lower secondary Mathematics curriculum.

The real differences begin in Years 3 and 4.

Students study Mathematics through two subjects, often called Math 1 and Math 2, although different schools may use names such as Intermediate Mathematics and Advanced Mathematics.

The syllabus includes:

  • Upper secondary Elementary Mathematics

  • Upper secondary Additional Mathematics

  • A small number of introductory JC H2 Mathematics topics

The overall goal is to prepare students directly for A-Level Mathematics without sitting for the O-Level examinations. IP schools also place greater emphasis on exploratory learning, independent thinking and interdisciplinary projects.

The Truth That Many Parents Don’t Realise

Here is something that surprises many parents.

The largest and most important component of IP Mathematics is actually Additional Mathematics.

In fact, based on my experience teaching the syllabus, approximately:

  • 60% consists of Additional Mathematics

  • 30% consists of Elementary Mathematics

  • Less than 10% consists of introductory JC Mathematics

That means the majority of IP Mathematics is built upon exactly the same mathematical foundation that mainstream Additional Mathematics students study.

This is why I often tell parents that they should not become overly concerned about finding an “IP-only” tuition class.

Instead, they should look for a programme that teaches Additional Mathematics exceptionally well while developing the deeper thinking skills expected in IP schools.

Myth: IP Math Is Much Harder Than O-Level A Math

This is another belief I encounter frequently.

Parents often assume that because IP students are academically stronger, every IP Mathematics paper must automatically be far more difficult.

The reality is more nuanced.

Unlike the nationwide O-Level examinations, IP examination papers are set internally by individual schools. Their difficulty can therefore vary significantly from school to school.

At the same time, O-Level Additional Mathematics papers have become increasingly demanding over the years, placing greater emphasis on critical thinking rather than routine procedures.

In other words, it is not accurate to conclude that every IP Mathematics examination is harder simply because it belongs to an IP school.

A Classroom Story I Have Never Forgotten

During the COVID years, a concerned father contacted me regarding his son, who was studying in Year 3 of an IP school.

His son had scored only 17% in his end-of-year IP Mathematics examination.

The boy sincerely believed the paper had been impossibly difficult. He also told me that the class average was well below the passing mark.

Before accepting that explanation, I decided to conduct a simple experiment.

I asked one of my mainstream Additional Mathematics students, who consistently achieved A1 grades, to attempt the same IP examination paper under examination conditions.

After marking the script, she scored 89%.

Of course, real examination conditions might have produced a slightly different result.

However, the difference was far too large to ignore.

The issue was not that IP Mathematics was impossibly difficult.

The issue was that many students had experienced disrupted learning during the Home-Based Learning period and had developed significant gaps in their mathematical foundation.

The Year 3 student subsequently joined my Additional Mathematics programme.

By the end of Year 4, he achieved an A in IP Mathematics.

That experience reinforced an important lesson.

When students strengthen their mathematical foundations, their confidence and results usually follow.

Why I Teach IP Students Differently

Although IP students and mainstream students often learn together in my classes, my teaching objectives go beyond preparing students for their next school examination.

I teach with the long-term goal of preparing them for JC H2 Mathematics.

This means I spend considerable time helping students understand why mathematical ideas work instead of encouraging them simply to memorise methods.

For example, when teaching inverse trigonometric functions, I do not ask students merely to memorise the principal value ranges.

Instead, we explore the graphs together and understand why those ranges exist.

Students who genuinely understand these concepts usually find the transition to JC Mathematics much smoother than those who relied purely on drill and practice.

Thinking Like an IP Student

One characteristic of the IP programme is that students are expected to think independently.

Questions are often less structured than those found in conventional textbooks.

For this reason, I deliberately design my worksheets so that questions progress gradually:

  • First, students learn the fundamental techniques.

  • Next, they solve increasingly challenging problems.

  • Finally, they tackle questions that require planning, strategy and higher-order thinking.

This gradual progression develops confidence while encouraging students to analyse unfamiliar situations instead of searching for memorised templates.

Should IP Students Attend Additional Math Tuition?

In my opinion, yes.

Not because IP students are weaker.

But because Additional Mathematics forms the backbone of the IP Mathematics curriculum.

A well-designed Additional Math Tuition programme provides:

  • Clear explanations of difficult concepts

  • Structured practice

  • Progressive exposure to challenging questions

  • Strong mathematical foundations for JC

Parents sometimes worry that a mainstream Additional Mathematics class cannot support an IP student.

From my experience, the opposite is often true.

A student who develops a deep understanding of Additional Mathematics will usually perform well in both IP Mathematics and, later, JC H2 Mathematics.

Final Thoughts

The goal of IP education is not simply to finish more topics.

It is to develop students who can think independently, analyse unfamiliar situations and build deep conceptual understanding.

That is also how Mathematics should be learnt.

If parents focus only on finding an “IP” label, they may overlook what truly matters.

The better question to ask is:

Will this programme build the mathematical thinking my child needs, not only for this year’s school examination, but also for Junior College and beyond?

In my experience, that foundation is what makes the greatest difference.
